- Tom De Haven, a professor of creative writing at Virginia Commonwealth University, is a popular culturist whose interests include literary and film noir, the Hollywood studio system and American comic strips. He has written criticism for Entertainment Weekly and for the New York Times Book Review, among other publications. De Haven?s novels include the ?Funny Papers? trilogy (?Funny Papers? (1985), ?Derby Dugan?s Depression Funnies? (1996) and ?Dugan Under Ground? (2001)). Of the trilogy, which starts with the beginning of the newspaper comic strip in the 1890s and stretches to the 1970s, the New York Times Book Review said ?The Derby books ... are a mighty accomplishment: John Dos Passos?s USA Trilogy for comic geeks.? His eighth novel, ?It?s Superman,? reinvented the early years of the well-known superhero.
Professor De Haven has experience speaking with the media and has been interviewed by reporters from such publications as the Associated Press, the Baltimore Sun, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
