Minority Political Leadership Institute

People talkingThe Minority Political Leadership Institute is a collaborative initiative of The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus Foundation.

The MPLI is an intensive five-month experience designed to promote leadership development for aspiring leaders interested in assuming leadership roles on issues relevant to minority and underserved communities. The MPLI program offers insights regarding personal leadership, policy and legislative processes, leadership legacy and culture, responsible stewardship, public service, and integrity for future leaders.

Graduates of the MPLI will:

  • Gain insights into personal leadership styles\
  • Build networks and knowledge of Virginia and beyond
  • Enhance a deeper understanding of community, cultural and group dynamics that affect change
  • Promote civic responsibility and the public-service legacy of minority communities

Each program year, colleges and universities from around the state act as host institutions for MPLI training. This year’s host institutions included: Norfolk State University, Northern Virginia Community College, St. Paul’s College and Virginia State University.

Susan T. Gooden, Ph.D., executive director of The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, provides leadership and curriculum development for the MPLI.
