Director’s Welcome

Welcome to the National Homeland Security Project of the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. Governments across the United States—federal, state, and local—are engaged in efforts to protect the social and economic stability of our communities. Natural and technological hazards and terrorism are real threats to our way of life. The field of homeland security is evolving and the field of emergency management is expanding to respond to the needs of American citizens. Our mission is to conduct research on state government homeland security and emergency preparedness programs. Strong support from the Wilder School and the College of Humanities and Sciences enables the project to carry out its mission. We are committed to producing research that makes useful contributions to the important work of homeland security and emergency management policy makers and practitioners. Our location in the capital of Virginia and close to the nation’s capital affords us a greater opportunity to reach out to other academic and government institutions. We’re proud to establish and grow the project at Virginia Commonwealth University—the largest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
