On October 17, 2008 the National Homeland Security Project held its 1st Annual Banquet at Levante’s in Washington, DC. The Banquet was attended by staff and friends of the Project, and funded entirely at personal expense by Project staff. Dr. Holly Goerdel, Assistant Professor of Public Administration at the University of Kansas, delivered the keynote address.
The Project Banquet was an opportunity to reflect upon the accomplishments of the National Homeland Security Project during the 2007-2008 academic year, as well as preview the coming year’s activities. For an overview of the Project’s recent events and activities, click here.
The Project Banquet also included presentation of a number of awards:
· Project Manager Austen Givens received the 2008 Outstanding Graduate Student Research Paper Award for his paper, “Toward a New Understanding of State-Level Intelligence: Fusion Centers as de facto Members of the Intelligence Community”, presented at the Student Association on Terrorism and Security Analysis 4th Annual Conference at the Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs on February 23, 2008.
· Project Director Dr. Dale Jones received the 2008 Outstanding Faculty Research Project Award for his research report Advancing Homeland Security, Homeland Defense, and Emergency Management Collaboration: Lessons from the Mid-Atlantic All Hazards Consortium. Dr. Jones has been invited to present the results of his research at the National Homeland Defense Foundation-sponsored Homeland Security/Homeland Defense Symposium VI at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs on October 27, 2008.
· Project Director Dr. Dale Jones and Project Manager Austen Givens jointly received the 2008 Excellence in Scholarship Award for their work on a paper titled “The Homeland Security Spectrum: Public Administration at the Core” presented by Dr. Jones at the prestigious Minnowbrook III Conference on The Future of Public Administration, Public Management, and Public Service around the World, sponsored by the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, on September 6, 2008, at Lake Placid, New York. Dr. Jones’ and Mr. Givens’ paper has been selected as one of twelve papers for publication in the Minnowbrook III Conference book for current scholars and students, as well as future generations.
· Project Manager Austen Givens received the 2008 Brick Award, presented to the faculty member or graduate student who demonstrates strong commitment, steadfast dedication, unselfish acts, noteworthy contributions, and concrete accomplishments to advance the mission of the National Homeland Security Project.
