Scholarship Background

The Excellence in Virginia Government Awards is the signature event of the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. Held each year in late November, the awards celebrate outstanding individuals and organizations, in the public and private sector, which have made noteworthy contributions to the practice of government and to the welfare of our communities and citizens.

Robert G. Templin, Jr., Ph.D. has dedicated his life to expanding education and economic opportunity for all Virginians.   Since his appointment to the faculty at the University of Virginia in 1976, he has been recognized nationally as a leader in Virginia education, workforce training and economic development. Dr. Templin is currently president of Northern Virginia Community College, the state’s largest institution of higher education and the nation’s second-largest two-year college.   During his tenure as president, Templin has led a business-higher education coalition aimed at reducing the region’s nursing and health care workforce shortage.   He also served as president of Virginia’s Center of Innovative Technology, which was credited with helping to create or retain more than 12,000 high-tech jobs in the commonwealth.   For the past 20 years, Dr. Templin’s work has been featured in such media as National Public Radio, USA Today and Fortune.   His life stands as a model for advancing the lives of all Virginia citizens.
