The Urban & Regional Planning Student Association help Habitat for Humanity

Seven members of the Urban & Regional Planning Student Association (URPSA) at VCU participated in a day-long home-building project for Habitat for Humanity on Friday, 18 April 2008. All of the student volunteers are enrolled in the Master of Urban & Regional Planning Program in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. One non-student volunteer was also on hand to lend his services.

Taking part in the work were Craig Carver, URPSA President; Laura Baker, URPSA Vice President; Sarah Propst-Worthley, URPSA Treasurer; Sarah's husband Steve (who is not a VCU student but generously donated his time); Geoffrey Knight; Rebecca Ribe; Chris York; and Adrienne Kotula. The work was hot and dirty, but everyone worked hard and contributed fully to making the day a success.

Sarah and Steve deserve a special mention in that they drove up from their residence in Hampton to particpate. Additionally, Steve had just returned home a few days earlier after being out of town for work for several weeks!

Habitat's on-site superintendants, Bill and Jerry, also deserve our thanks. They treated all of the volunteers with nothing but the utmost respect and professionalism throughout the day. Their encouraging demeanor contributed greatly to making the work enjoyable, which made it possible to complete a significant amount of work on the project house.

All of us in URPSA look forward to the possibility of another volunteer workday with Habitat in the Fall semester!
