Living Simply, Living Justly
Living more simply is a spiritual quest, a practical endeavor, a path to physical and mental wellness; and it is also a necessary response to the urgent global ecological decline, a social justice movement, and a way of life that promotes the common good. The course will cover many topics in the expanding field of simple living. Students are expected to enter a spiritual as well as an academic journey. They will be invited to experience ascetical practices associated with living more simply, e.g. meditation, silence, observation, non-consumerism, conservation of resources. They also will be required to keep up with the assigned readings and write brief, weekly papers that integrate academic learnings with personal experiences. The class will include dialogue and discussion, videos, speakers passionate about the topic, and some lecture.
