- Biology and a minor in chemistry with a concentration in pre-dentistry
When she’s not hunkered down studying in the James Branch Cabell Library (Starbucks is a favorite spot), Brandy Edmonds can be found splitting her time between numerous extracurricular activities. She serves as the event co-chair for Relay for Life, works as a supplemental instruction leader at the Campus Learning Center and cheers for the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s basketball team.
Such a full load can be tough to manage, but Edmonds, a biology major with a minor in chemistry and a concentration in pre-dentistry, thrives amidst the bustle.
“If I commit to something then I’m going to do it,” she said.
Edmonds prides herself in her time management skills and says The Honors College keeps her on task.
“I have to keep my GPA up,” she said. “I don’t settle for low grades at all. The Honors College helps you hold yourself to a really high standard.”
Coming out of high school, Edmonds had the grades but not the test scores to immediately join The Honors College at VCU. She earned a 4.0 GPA as a freshman, applied and was accepted.
“I wanted to do something that set me apart,” she said. “I wanted to go from being a good VCU student to being a great VCU student.”
Edmonds says The Honors College affords her more opportunities than other students to excel in her academic career and credits her academic adviser for giving her the confidence to apply to the Guaranteed Admission Program.
“The advisers are very good at what they do,” she said.
So good in fact that Edmonds found out last summer that she was accepted into the Guaranteed Admission Program for dentistry.
“That was the most exciting thing that’s happened to me,” she said.
Now, Edmonds looks forward to fall 2012 when she’ll enroll in the VCU School of Dentistry and begin juggling the responsibilities of a soon-to-be-dentist. Given her success as a multi-tasking Honors College student, any future challenges will be met with ease.
